IFor new products, being process Manager, as I will be responsible for helping project Managers to develop various new product processes and use them effectively, here, Invention and Innovation, both are related to New product, for new product development, we use the term Invention as here, we will be creating product and we will introduce the process fully for the first time, here, that product or process has not created before, so, this product and process is new to us, in our real life, we see very few Inventions, as many products get updated over time, people just take reference from another products and services, processes, to build another products, services or processes, here, we will not see Invention.
How Innovation is different from Invention, as for Innovation, we usually improve the available or existing products, services and processes/results, so, here, reference is existing products or processes, here, we will get some kind of unique products or processes that can have distinction from existing products or processes, most of the products come with differentiation, they are Innovative in nature and they usually came from a existing products or processes, again, innovation can make organization to build their business standing in the community, people, employees get highly motivated and energized to bring commitment towards Organization, now a days, we find that many organization help people to grow with taking their innovative skills. That is also great for business point of view.
We can have example of Invention that includes like Microprocessor, it was small circuit placed on the circuit board, later this Microprocessor got Innovated over time, products like desktop computer, Laptop, Mobile device also used that Microprocessor that is different for different devices as, this product – Microprocessor is innovated over time, again, we can have another example like Mobile device was first invented, It was fully new creation, later over time, we have seen that how Mobile devices are Innovated, Initially Mobile device was used only for calling purpose, but later, this mobile devices are used for not only calling, but also for various purposes like it is having camera, we can take photo snap, It is having calculator, so we can calculate, It is having video calling facility, so we can go for video calling, and finally many things as applicable for smart phone, It can help us to know differentiation between Invention and Innovation.
Again, being a process manager, we can see product development is applicable for any industry, here, in a manufacturing company, we can see various products upgrading, development over time, for example, construction machineries have different ranges of operations limit and capacity, here, many construction machineries go with prototype building, as, the products are here, Innovated, hence, the design of the products needs to be reviewed through prototype building, here, we can check the performance of that new machines and It can reduce various uncertainties as products are tested, many businesses follow such Innovation to survive in the market, as It can give business competitive advantages, once, organization built a product, that could have distinction, however, number of competitor can grow over time and such businesses will be impacted, therefore, business need to follow such Innovative culture within the organizational environment or context.
